Ford posts $2.7B profit for 2009; restores profit sharing with UAW

Ford Motor Co. said it made $2.7 billion in 2009, its first full-year profit since 2005.
The automaker also said it will remain profitable in 2010, putting it well ahead of its stated goal of restoring profitability by 2011.
"While we still face significant business environment challenges ahead, 2009 was a pivotal year for Ford and the strongest proof yet that our 'One Ford' plan is working and that we are forging a path toward profitable growth by working together as one team, leveraging our global scale," said CEO Alan Mulally. "In every part of the world, we are providing customers with great products, building a stronger business and contributing to a better world. Our progress has helped us gain market share in most of our major markets."
Ford's profit was a sharp contrast to the record $14.6 billion loss the company reported a year ago. Before taxes and excluding special items, the automaker's operating profit was $454 million.
And Ford plans to share its success with workers.
Under a profit-sharing agreement with the United Auto Workers, it will pay each of its 43,000 eligible U.S. hourly workers approximately $450. U.S. salaried workers will not be getting bonuses, but the automaker previously announced it was restoring merit pay increases and 401(k) matches that had been suspended.
The Dearborn-based company also reported fourth-quarter earnings of $868 million. Excluding special charges and taxes, Ford's fourth-quarter operating profit totaled $1.8 billion, or 43 cents per share. It was Ford's third consecutive quarterly profit, and significantly better than the 26 cents per share Wall Street had expected, according to a survey of 13 analysts by Thomson Reuters. "We believe Ford has the liquidity and clean balance sheet to make it to 2011, when it should consistently generate cash due to working capital inflows, higher production and structural and legacy savings," said analyst Eric Selle of JPMorgan prior to today's announcement. "Our enthusiasm is tempered by a lukewarm 2010 outlook due to higher advertising expenses, capital expenditures, raw material costs and interest expenses, as well as a tepid European forecast."

Ford profitable worldwide
For the fourth quarter, Ford's North American operations reported a pre-tax operating profit of $707 million, compared with a loss of $1.9 billion a year ago. The company attributed the gains to higher sales volumes, net pricing increases and lower materials costs.
In South America, the company reported a profit of $369 million, up from $105 million in the last three months of 2008.
Europe posted a profit of $305 million, compared with a loss of $338 million a year ago.
In Asia, the Pacific and Africa, Ford eked out a $19 million profit, compared with a loss of $208 million for the same period a year ago.
Ford's Swedish brand, Volvo, narrowed its loss to $32 million from $736 million a year ago. Ford is currently negotiating a sale of Volvo to a Chinese automaker.
The automaker's lending arm, Ford Credit, reported a pre-tax operating profit of $696 million, compared with a loss of $372 million a year ago. The company said the increase reflected lower residual losses due to higher auction values and lower provisions for credit losses.
Today's strong financial results are more good news for a company that has been riding high since sweeping the "Car of the Year" and "Truck of the Year" awards at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit earlier this month.
Ford, which is four years into a painful restructuring that has seen it eliminate tens of thousands of jobs and close 14 factories, was the only U.S. automaker not to seek a federal bailout. It also was the only one to avoid bankruptcy.
Ford reduced its automotive structural costs by another $500 million in the fourth quarter. That brought its 2009 cost reduction total to $5.1 billion -- well ahead of its full-year target of $4 billion. The company said these improvements reflected lower manufacturing and engineering costs, a reduction in pension and retiree health care expenses, and lower advertising and sales costs.
Ford ended the year with $25.5 billion in cash reserves, nearly double the $13.4 billion it had at the beginning of 2009.
While Ford said it will remain profitable in 2010, the company cautioned that its costs will increase as it ramps up production to meet an expected increase in the demand for its cars and trucks. It said this year's cash flow will be less than it reported in the second half of 2009.
"We delivered very encouraging results in the fourth quarter and for full year 2009 despite severe economic headwinds, although our transformation remains a work in progress," said Lewis Booth, Ford's chief financial officer. "We are committed to staying absolutely focused on executing our plan to deliver profitable growth."

2010 Ford Flex

2010 Ford Flex Best All Wheel Drive Vehicle

Best All-Wheel-Drive Vehicles for 2010
By James Tate of MSN Autos

Ford Flex

Surprised to see Ford's hip new people mover on the list? Don't be. If the sea of crossovers out there isn't to your liking, it might be worth giving the 2010 Ford Flex the once-over. Aside from a more than capable 3.5-liter V6 engine with 262 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque, the Flex utilizes a seamless 6-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive to get you to the mall without the worry of being categorized by the masses. You can also opt for the new twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 with 355 horsepower, although that option will set you back nearly $7,000 over the all-wheel-drive Flex's price tag of $33,200. Throw in the ability to comfortably seat seven and this might be the sharpest way to go dashing through the snow in 2010.

2011 Mustang Pricing

2011 Ford Mustang Prices Released

January 19, 2010 by Alex Spencer via the Road & Track Blog Ford Mustang
Ford Motor Company has officially released base pricing and options for the 2011 Mustang models as well as prices on available options for the revamped American legend.  The V-6 Coupe and V-6 Coupe-Premium models, priced at $22,145 and $25,845 respectively, each cost slightly more than their 2010 versions (which were $20,995 and $23,995).  But for a significant increase in power—305 bhp from 210 bhp—a couple thousand dollars more is a reasonable tradeoff.  It’s the same story for the V-6 Convertible and V-6 Convertible-Premium, now priced at $27,145 and $30,845.
The V-8 Mustang GT pricing, however, really knocks you off your chair.  Starting at $29,645 (up from $27,995), the GT Coupe’s 5.0-liter V-8 generates more than 400 bhp, something unheard of for under $30,000. The GT Coupe-Premium is set at $32,845 with a reasonable $34,645 for the GT Convertible and $37,845 for the GT Convertible-Premium.
Keep in mind the 2011 Mustang models will all be fitted with a 6-speed transmission as opposed to the 2010’s 5-speed.  Some options that stand out include an automatic transmission ($995), a glass roof ($1995) and the Electronics package ($2340).

The 2011 Shelby GT350

2011 Shelby GT350

To celebrate the 45th anniversary of the launch of the 1965-1970 GT350, Shelby American handed over a 2011 Ford Mustang GT to a team that includes a former Hot Wheels designer to create a modern version of the legendary muscle car.
With a 500 hp supercharged version of the Mustang's new 5.0-liter V8 under the hood, Borla exhaust system, 14-inch Baer brakes, Ford Racing suspension and bodywork that includes a functional hood scoop, deep side skirts, and classic louvered covers for the rear side windows, the GT350 promises to be one of the more potent ponies in the Mustang stable.
Price for the conversion is $33,995 on top of the $30,495 you'll pay for a new Mustang GT. Worth it? 1965 originals sell in the neighborhood of $300,000 today, so it's definitely a bargain compared to one of those.

2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid - Car of the Year

2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid - Car of the Year

Monday, January 11, 2010
By The Associated Press and published on Foxnews.com

DETROIT — Ford Motor Co.'s market momentum got a lift Monday by winning both the 2010 North American Car and Truck of the Year awards.

Ford's Fusion Hybrid midsize sedan took top car honors and its versatile Transit Connect compact van snagged truck of the year at the Detroit auto show.

It was only the third time in 17 years that an automaker has won both awards, selected by 49 auto journalists and given annually since 1994. Finalists for the car award included the Buick LaCrosse and Volkswagen Golf GTI and TDI diesel. The Chevrolet Equinox, Ford Transit Connect and Subaru Outback were finalists for the truck award.

"It's such a huge motivator for our team," Mark Fields, Ford's president of the Americas, told reporters after the announcements on the first day of media previews for the show. "It's a reaffirmation of all the hard work over the past couple of years."

The awards, given annually by journalists who test cars throughout the year, are often used by automakers in advertising. Vehicles are judged on innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value.

Ford, the only U.S.-based automaker to avoid bankruptcy protection, has fared better than its two Detroit rivals, with overall sales down 15 percent last year compared with a 36 percent drop for Chrysler and a 30 percent decline for GM.

Ford's final month of 2009 was strong, with a 33 percent increase in sales thanks to strong demand for midsize cars. Last year, it gained U.S. market share for the first time since 1995, helped by critical raves for its fuel-efficient cars, like the midsize Fusion. Its compact Focus and popular Escape crossover also boosted sales.

"We still have a long way to go ... getting the business back to healthy profitability," Fields said. "We have to channel that good feeling into our efforts for 2010."

To be considered for the car and truck of the year honors, vehicles must be new or substantially changed from the previous model.

Last year's winners were the Hyundai Genesis luxury sedan and the Ford F-150 pickup. The Transit Connect, a small, European van, is the sixth Ford truck to win the award. Fields said the automaker thinks of it as a "white space vehicle" — one unlike anything else on the road.

"When you see this on the road, your first reaction is, 'What is that?"' he said. "The second reaction for a lot of customers, particularly small fleets and small business owners is, 'Hey, I want to get into that and check it out."'

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 7, 2010 – Ford introduced a smarter, safer, simpler system to connect drivers with in-car technologies and their digital lives today at the 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES).

Building on its leadership with the award-winning SYNC® device connectivity system, Ford has combined a variety of technologies into one powerful, intuitive connected driver experience called MyFord, which will begin rolling out on vehicles this year.

“MyFord delivers a premium interior experience that will help consumers fall in love with their vehicles again,” said Derrick Kuzak, Ford group vice president, Global Product Development. “It integrates all our signature features so customers will know exactly what they’re going to get in any Ford vehicle they may find themselves driving, no matter where they are in the world.”

This new in-vehicle connectivity experience replaces many of the traditional vehicle buttons, knobs and gauges. With more voice commands, clear, crisp LCD screens that can be customized and five-way buttons like those on cell phones and MP3 players, drivers can choose which information is front and center through a button click, voice command or touch-screen tap.

Driven by trends

Ford decided to undertake a sweeping and ambitious redesign of the automotive interface after studying consumer electronics trends and the many new ways in which drivers were using technology inside their Ford vehicles.

Recent years have seen a massive expansion in the variety of in-car communications, navigation and infotainment technologies consumers regularly use. The expectations of average drivers have outgrown the traditional “button/knob/gauge” interface used in cars for the past 100 years, as most consumer and household electronics have moved to colorful digital displays and multi-function touch-sensitive buttons.

Consumers are insisting on simpler interfaces even as they’re demanding more in-car connectivity, more options and more information – a dilemma known as “simplexity.” Plus, the pace of advancement is expected to continue unabated, posing a new opportunity for drivers and engineers alike.

“As we began developing MyFord’s capability, we saw this groundswell of new technology, new functionality and incredible capability opening up to consumers,” said Mark Fields, Ford’s president of The Americas. “It was readily apparent that unless we devised an intuitive interface to help drivers manage these capabilities, they could detract – and possibly distract – from the driving experience.”

For example, prior to SYNC, drivers often were required to either leave behind their communications, digital information and favorite music while on the road or split their attention between driving and selecting songs, making phone calls or using the navigation system.

Influenced – and powered – by SYNC

When launched, Ford SYNC, developed with Microsoft, helped provide a seamless transition – and seamless flow of information and entertainment – from the moment drivers entered their vehicles to the moment they got out. As Ford began to develop additional SYNC capabilities and add other signature content, the company realized it was redefining the interior environment and ownership experience.

“With MyFord driver connect technology, we realized we weren’t necessarily competing with other automakers, but we were really redefining how customers interacted with their cars,” said Jim Buczkowski, Ford director of Electronics and Electrical Systems Engineering. “We had to look very closely at the evolution of hand-held devices in terms of user interface, connectivity, productivity and entertainment applications. Our goal is to set the benchmark for the automotive user interface, just as we’ve done for device connectivity with SYNC.”

Accommodating all types of drivers, all types of vehicles

In the initial planning stages of redesigning the interior experience, Ford collaborated with IDEO, a world leader in helping consumers connect with technology. As a result, the company identified four key attributes of successful interfaces:

Be attentive: Use controls, screens and other interfaces with which most users already are comfortable and familiar.

Be approachable:Create an attractive environment with rich graphics, vibrant colors and buttons/screens that are appealing to the eye and the touch, and consistent with what consumers expect from certain functions.

Be clear: Rather than an imposing cluster of buttons, switches and dials, create a clean-looking interface, with controls that fall readily to hand and displays that are exactly where users expect to find them. Provide maximum control without the driver’s hands ever leaving the steering wheel.

Be connected: For technophiles? Let drivers display all the information they want in the way they want it. For technophobes? Make sure basic controls, like radio and HVAC settings, still are accessible via familiar stack-mounted controls, so users don’t have to learn a host of new commands to operate the vehicle.

“The driving experience is not just about getting from A to B,” explained J Mays, Ford group vice president of Design. “It’s about the approach to the car, how it responds to you when you get in, and how it responds to you while you drive. It’s the anticipation, the welcome and the continuing conversation. Keeping these principles in mind helped us ensure we made decisions for the right reasons.”

A global future for MyFord driver connect technology

As a signature offering, and one with the potential to help reduce driver distraction, Ford knew widely offering MyFord driver connect technology was a priority from the start.

“Democratization of technology is a key aspect of our product plan,” Kuzak said. “With MyFord, we didn’t want to create an upscale electronics package and just put it on our highest-end vehicles. This technology will be available across our full range of vehicles: From our affordable small cars to the ultimate Lincoln, we’re going to make a premium, appealing and intuitive experience available to everyone.”

MyFord also will be expanded across world markets. As new and refreshed models continue to arrive, nearly all Ford passenger vehicles will be outfitted with MyFord driver connect technology. There will be minor variations across car lines, but the interface will be instantly recognizable in Ford vehicles around the globe.

MyFord will arrive later this year on the redesigned 2011 Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX crossovers, before appearing on the all-new 2012 Ford Focus for global markets. By 2015, approximately 80 percent of Ford’s North American models are expected to have MyFord driver connect technology, with similar percentages predicted for the world market.

“We’ve developed an environment that will make every Ford vehicle feel like a Ford,” said Kuzak. “Across the country, across the globe, all of our products will have the same type of feel, making them instantly comfortable to the drivers who know and love them, and MyFord will become a key part of the joy of owning and driving a Ford product.”
